Substitutes On Standby was born August 15, 2003 with it’s placement of two substitutes at Starling Child Care and Learning Center. Currently it is the only one of it’s kind in Virginia. After it’s first placement of substitutes, the next month it provided 111 hours of substitute coverage in the metro Richmond area. Almost one year later, this wonderful service is averaging 1200 hours per month. Quite an accomplishment!

Substitutes On Standby was born from a dream. It’s owner, Jennie W. Trovinger was a center director for fifteen (15) years. Her greatest challenge like that of many directors was covering absences. Whether covering a day off, a sick child or a doctor’s appointment, there was a need, which had to be filled; unlike paperwork that would sit on someone’s desk. The other alternative was to move children or teachers, which was not "a good alternative" but had to be done! Today Substitutes On Standby services 30 childcare and preschool programs in the metro Richmond area and working on expanding to surrounding areas. It’s goal and mission is to provide high quality and well-trained substitutes. In addition centers can request their favorite sub. With this goal in mind SOS can provide a consistent alternative for early childhood programs. We are constantly recruiting and training subs. Our success rate of providing a sub is 98%.

Substitutes On Standby offers many benefits. One is to save the director time (at least sixteen (16) hours per orientation) and money. SOS provides the substitute with twenty (20) hours of training. Your sub will arrive with the required paperwork in hand. This includes a State of Virginia court record check. Another of its many benefits is to cover release time for staff training. Staff is then available to increase their training in early childhood without taking time away from their own family and children. The best benefit of all is when a center has a staff opening, it can "try out" one of our subs. It the match works then a buy out process is available. SOS is proud to have provided 15 substitutes permanent placement.
